This ENC In-Depth discussion is the third and final of the ENC’s EaP Podcast Series dedicated to the report entitled “Visions and Strategies for Conflict Transformation: Dominant and Alternative Discourses on Gender, Militarism, and Peace Processes”. This particular studies looks into the importance of media in conflict resolution. Focusing on Georgia, Turkey, Azerbaijan and Armenia, the podcast analyses the representation of minorities in media outlets in these countries in order to identify discriminatory discourses.

The broader report was published by the Imagine Center for Conflict Transformation in 2017 with the support of the Center for Independent Social Research (CISR) in the framework of the project Joint Platform for Realistic Peace in the South Caucasus.

The discussion is conducted by Andreas Marazis, ENC Head Researcher for Eastern Europe & Central Asia, and features the comments and insights of Ms. Zeynep Arslan, Program specialist at Sabanci Foundation; and Mr. Giorgi Bobghiashvili, member of the governing board of the European Center for Minority Issues- Caucasus.

ENC In-Depth (EaP Series): Alternative Peace Processes for the South Caucasus

This ENC In-Depth (EaP series) is the second in a series of debates dedicated to a report on “Visions and Strategies for Conflict Transformation: Dominant and Alternative Discourses on Gender, Militarism, and Peace Processes“. The latter was published last year by the Imagine Center for Conflict Transformation with the support of the Center for Independent Social Research in the framework of the project Joint Platform for Realistic Peace in the South Caucasus.

This particular ENC In-Depth discussion is entitled ‘Alternative Peace Processes for the South Caucasus‘ and assesses the impact of new transformative mechanisms for peace processes in the region, emphasizing the lessons learnt from Turkey and Colombia in the field of transitional justice, as well as the role of education and, in particular, multilingual education in promoting peace.

The discussion is conducted by Andreas Marazis, ENC Head Researcher for Eastern Europe & Central Asia, and features the comments and insights of Nisan Alıcı, research coordinator in Demos Research Center for Peace, Democracy and Alternative Politics; and Dr. Philip Gamaghelyan, co-founder and director of programs of the Imagine Center for Conflict Transformation, and the co-managing editor of the Caucasus Edition.

ENC In-Depth (EaP Series): Rise of Militaristic Sentiment and Patriotic Discourses

Following the launching of the second hard copy issue of the Caucasus Edition: Journal of Conflict Transformation entitled “Visions and Strategies for Conflict Transformation: Dominant and Alternative Discourses on Gender, Militarism, and Peace Processes” by the Imagine Center for Conflict Transformation in partnership with the Center for Independent Social Research – Berlin, ENC set up a series of In-Depth discussions dedicated on the presentation of the report.

The first (out of three) in-depth discussion focuses on the role of the militaristic sentiment and patriotic discourses in Armenia, Azerbaijan, Russia, and Turkey with Dr. Sergey Rumyansev, who is the co-founder of the Centre for Independent Social Research (CISR) and editor of the report, and Dr. Andrey Devyatkov, Senior Researcher at the Center for Post-Soviet Studies of the Institute of Economics of the Russian Academy of Sciences and Associate Professor of the Department of Regional Problems of World Politics at Lomonosov Moscow State University.

ENC In-Depth (EaP Series): The role of development cooperation in the areas of protracted conflicts

Prior to a conference dedicated on the strategic advantages and limitations of the EU, UNDP, donors and development partners vis-à-vis protracted conflicts that was hosted by the Mission of Switzerland to the European Union in cooperation with UNDP, ENC Head Researcher for Eastern Europe & Central Asia Andreas Marazis met with Ms. Dafina Gercheva, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Moldova and Mr. Niels Scott, UN Resident Coordinator and UNDP Resident Representative in Georgia. Emphasis was given on the role of development cooperation in the areas of protracted conflicts and more specifically in Georgia and Moldova.

Following faithfully the guidelines set up by the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), UNDP is involved in various capacity building projects together with other donors such as the EU in an effort to strengthening the collaboration of opposite sides in both countries. It encourages dialogue between Moldova and Transnistria, and between Georgia and South Ossetia and Abkhazia, while emphasising on the engagement of youth and women in peacebuilding initiatives.

ENC Podcast: Perspectives ahead of the EU-Turkey high level dialogue meetings

As December will be a high point of the year in Turkey-EU relations, with Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Mehmet Simsek meeting with Jyrki Katainen, the European Commission’s Vice President for Jobs, Growth, Investment and Competitiveness. ENC invited Ambassador Christian Berger, Head of Delegation of the European Union to Turkey and Ambassador Selim Yenel, Undersecretary of the Turkish Ministry for EU Affairs and previous Ambassador and Permanent Delegate of Turkey to the European Union, to review the events of 2017 in the EU-Turkish relations, from the constitutional referendum to the Dutch and German elections.

Moderated by Samuel Doveri Vesterbye, Director of the European Neighbourhood Council, our distinguished guests discussed about the current state of the EU-Turkey relationship through different topics, including cooperation, Customs Union, cultural diplomacy and terrorism.

The In-Depth discussion is part of ENC’s EaP Series of podcast meetings dedicated to developments in the Eastern Partnership area in the fields of Security, Foreign Policy, Economy, Democracy and Education. 

Moderated by ENC Head Researcher for Eastern Europe & Central Asia, Andreas Marazis, our panelists assessed the future prospects of the Eastern Partnership, the challenges on the way ahead to the upcoming Summit, the reform progress in Ukraine, Georgia and Moldova, as well as the security concerns in the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the frozen conflicts in the region.
